OUR HISTORY

Ungar Construction began in the early 1980s when Garry Ungar transitioned from grain farming to founding a construction company in Theodore, Saskatchewan. Garry’s former craning career had already seen notable achievements, including work on Calgary’s Saddledome and the Coronach Power Station, but farming’s financial demands and Garry’s desire to be close to his family inspired the creation of G Ungar Construction. Together with his family’s support, his wife Judy and their children—Scott, Jason, Erin, and Brennan—Garry began balancing farming and his new venture, starting with a single D7-17A for farm-related services like clearing bush and building roads.

In 1985, Garry and his 16-year-old son Scott tackled their first CN derailment together, forging a partnership that remains the backbone of the company today. By 1992, Garry decided to devote himself entirely to construction, which at that time had grown to include the Parkland Mobile Repair shop and a tractor franchise. Signature projects like the Avonlea Dam and a Bombing Range for CFB Wainwright helped establish the company’s reputation for excellence.

After graduation, Scott had spent approximately 10 years in Alberta's pipeline industry with the likes of Waschuck and Bannister, and became Vice President in 1998 and President in 2008, continuing to build on his father’s vision. In 1998, Yorkville Public Utility Board commissioned Ungar Construction with an underground utilities project, marking the beginning of its municipal infrastructure services. From 2000-2008, the company operated a successful logging division, a contract with Louisiana Pacific, which kept the crews busy in the winter months loading rail cars with aspen bound for Hayward Wisconsin, and since 2008 Ungar Construction has provided rail car maintenance and fleet services to CPR.

From humble farm service roots, Ungar Construction evolved into a leader in municipal infrastructure, underground utilities, crushing and mass earth moving across southern and central Saskatchewan. Notable projects include the Fishing Lake flood response, track twinning in Melville, and upgrades to water and wastewater systems in Prince Albert and Saskatoon. Investing in technology, particularly GPS, has allowed the company to streamline design and construction. We are looking forward to advancements in e-powered equipment and other technologies that will position the company for future advancement in sustainable development.

Ungar Construction remains committed to contributing to the growth and prosperity of Saskatchewan’s communities, delivering essential services like water, waste, and transportation. Our families and staff live in many of these Saskatchewan communities and we are all proud to contribute to them. We have learned that creating strong teams within each project is key, and that starts at the top under Garry and Scott’s leadership and our supervisory structure. We are dedicated to developing leaders in this industry and providing a safe and rewarding workplace for our workforce. Our company's competitive spirit, paired with a strong family-centric ethos, ensures its continued success and adaptability in an evolving industry.
